The small significance of Obama and Huffington

It is, I'm reliably informed, the first time a President has taken a question from a web-only publication. The world's web-friendly president calls on the Huffington Post, unsurpisingly, in his first press conference as Boss, earlier this week. So what if the question goes nowhere in particular and who cares if the HuffPo's inquisitor has clearly only just bought that suit? Web-types, bloggers and people in thick glasses will have thought it a Significant Moment.

Web reactions to Gaza

Worth watching in part for its Pathe-news commentary and the fact that the man has never said the word 'blogosphere' before (although I shouldn't be so rude about France 24, who are, after all, one of our video partners).

But its also interesting in itself - how the Gaza attacks played out on the net, and for some distubing sidelines on Barack Obama.

Edit: And I ought to add this too...

Just a quick mention of a couple projects on the go…

Along with the DebateGraph people (most notably the estimable David Price) we’ve been trying out a mapping project on What Obama should do next. It’s an attempt at creating a collaborative document to map out the first steps of Obama’s government.

As I’ve blathered elsewhere, the Obama government is in for something of a shock as it adjusts from its excellent digital campaigning work to digital government. There’s encouraging signs, but feel free to join in here and follow the debate from the point of view of a world citizen. Once you sign up and join in, you’ll get updates as others do, or you can follow it on Twitter.

And while we’re jumping in to other people’s governments, have a look too at our latest collaboration with our friends at Live Journal. Global Viewpoints is a community dedicated to the discussion of ideas and opinions from around the globe, with questions posed ourselves and other newspapers around the world. Have a look…

Obama and the web - here to stay?

It's already showing the signs of a classic break-up. While you should be enjoying the warm glow of the honeymoon period, you're already starting to have naggy little doubts. Is he still committed to this relationship?

He hardly calls any more and when he does, he wants to talk about completely different things than the thoughts you used to share. You're already getting the feeling that maybe it was the conquest that was interesting him, the thrill of the chase. Now he's got you, he's losing interest. You're not the first to be seduced and abandoned like this, but it's the thought that it could have been different this time that makes the hurt so peculiarly painful.

Over the last eighteen months, Barack Obama and his team have mastered the internet, raising unprecedented amounts of cash and raising awareness, enthusiasm and registrations amongst the digitised populace with a savvy mix of rich and social media. And in that media, he seemed to be listening. The comments button always had a tick in it and people cheerfully gave their support with varying degrees of coherence, but high levels of enthusiasm.
